Museum in Morecambe?
The consortium attempting to create an exhibition dedicated to the life of comedian Eric Morecambe, in his hometown of Morecambe, has come one step closer to turning their dreams into a reality. The group has today secured part-funding for a feasibility study from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).
The study will assess the sustainability of a dedicated Eric Morecambe visitor attraction in the area, and will also help to identify potential capital funding and private sector partners.
Mark Bushell, spokesman for the consortium said: “This is great news not only for the town of Morecambe but for the Northwest. Eric was a comedy genius and the collections of the Eric Morecambe estate help to explain how this region helped to shape the man. Along with his statue this exhibition has the potential to attract and captivate visitors of all ages and enable us to introduce his legacy to a new generation of fans.”
Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive of the NWDA said: “The NWDA is pleased to be able to support this feasibility study. Eric Morecambe was a British icon and we know that his statue on Morecambe Promenade is a great attraction for his fans. The Agency is committed to supporting the regeneration of Morecambe and this study will help us to examine the options for the continued development of the resort.”
Geraldine Smith MP form Morecambe and Lunsdale, who has supported the project since its inception said: “I’m delighted that the NWDA’s funding will help begin the process of establishing a permanent exhibition celebrating the talents of one of the regions most endearing and much loved sons. I’m convinced that it will be hugely popular.”
Gary Morecambe, Eric’s son, is delighted with the news of the financial support and said: “My father left us with a fantastic collection of memorabilia, but it deserves to be enjoyed by more than just the family. We would be immensely proud to see an accessible, interactive exhibition, explaining my father’s contribution to the world of comedy, opened in his home town of Morecambe.”
And to celebrate the funding Gary, along with Eric’s beloved ventriloquist dummy, Charlie, will publicly launch the Feasibility Study at the Eric Morecambe statue in Morecambe on Thursday 20 August at 12.30pm. Also on view will be further artefacts from the families stunning collections.
