Britain's Most Loved and Best Comedy Double Act

Parkinson

Book Review from 2008

Cover

This book, published in 1975 with all royalties given to the Variety Club of Great Britain, include some of Parkinson's great interviews.

The interviews are not published in full, instead we get the highlights from people such as Muhammad Ali, Bing Crosby, Peter Sellers and of course Morecambe & Wise.

Judging by the photographs that accompany the Eric and Ern interview, this particular chapter is taken from the 1972 episode in which they appeared with Raquel Welch. They are both wearing the same clothes, as is Raquel in her interview.

What is different though is the seating arrangement and the actual interview printed. For those who have seen the Parkinson episode, Eric and Ern are sat together with Parky on their left. The photographs in the book show Parky in the middle.

As for the interview, there is hardly anything reproduced from the broadcast show so reading it poses the question of whether it is material not used, or material from the other 1973 episode.

Considering both Eric and Ern are wearing the same clothes as the 72 show, we can only conclude it is material that was not broadcast.

Parkinson: Do you ever get people who refuse to come on your programme because they think they might get sent up rotten?
Eric: Yes, well, there's one or two people. I mean I won't mention names, but… Des O'Connor… I have some good news about Des. He's got a sore throat.
Parkinson: You were a Bevan Boy, weren't you?
Eric: I was down the mines.
Parkinson: What was being a miner like?
Eric: Dark!

Overall a good, if short read, and with all the other interviews to get through it could be worth tracking down.
