Bring Me Laughter
Book Review from 2008
Cover
This small A5 sized paperback is yet another of those 70’s books that Eric and Ern put their name to.
The book contains 86 cartoons in the style of the picture postcard, (supposedly) chosen by Eric and Ern and published here together.
The humour mostly revolves around religion and marriage, although not in a derogatory way. For example one cartoon depicts a married couple midst argument with the man proclaiming; “Just remember, I’m not tied to you, the vicar pronounced us man and wife – not husband and wife.”
A few cartoons cover other subjects with some quite funny moments such as the young boy handing over his school report with the words; “I’ve obliterated a certain name from that school report so as to protect the innocent.”
If you like these types of comedy then you will not be disappointed, despite only being 86 of them.
The introduction by Eric and Ern goes as follows;
Religion has always been a good source of humour, that is why it is such a pleasure to select some of these cartoons.
In our TV show, Eric and I had a lot of laughs out of playing two monks. I must say the robes are very uncomfortable and so was having to wear a tonsure – what we call a hair cut with a hole in it. Why did I have to wear one? I could have just taken my wig off. (shame on you!)
Year ago in variety we had people who did vicar acts. They came on dancing to the tune of ‘In the mood’ and did jokes about collections and Christianity and Harvest Festivals. I think it’s a shame they have disappeared.
I know ove the years we have had ‘Oh Brother’, ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ and of course ‘Dave Allen’, but the single stand up comic parson seems to have disappeared. Still, it’s all in good fun and only human; as long as there is no offence taken then long may it go on.
I still laugh about the man who wanted to donate £10,000 to the church. The vicar was overwhelmed, “What can I do in return?” he said.
“When you get to the bit on your sermon where you say ‘give us this day our daily bread’, would you say from Jones Bakery?”
