Britain's Most Loved and Best Comedy Double Act

The Morecambe and Wise Quiz Book

Book Review from 2007

Cover
Promising a 1000 questions and a sprinkling of surprise facts, this neat little book covers every aspect of Eric and Ernie’s life and is packed full of facts and figures that would be ideally suited as a coffee table book.

With forwards from Galton and Simpson, the great script writers of such classics as Hancock and Steptoe And Son, the book quickly settles down to delivering question after question in various categories.

The first batch deals with Eric’s and Ernie’s early life before the act formed with question about birthdays, theatres, amateur contests and radio work. Questions vary from the “can you name…” and “what was…” type, to true or false and multiple choice.

"At which theatre did Morecambe & Wise make their debut as a double act?"

Throughout the book there are reminiscences from people who worked with them or met them, or for whom they had a strong influence. These include Angela Rippon, Barry Cryer and Bill Cotton.

Moving on from the early days we are taken into the early work they did on the stage and theatres, through radio programs, both their own and as guests and into the ATV series. We then move into the BBC and beyond as the questions follow the lives of our favourite comedians.

Other sections cover questions about guests and locations, television work such as the Sweeney episode, and their live shows.

"How many Gapefruits did Eric halve in The Striper?"

Released just before the festive season, this book would be a great stocking filler, particularly if you or the person you are buying it for, is of that certain age when comedy was at its best.

It is one of those book that can happily sit on the coffee table and be picked up and flicked through to pass a few minutes from time to time. I wouldn’t recommend reading it cover to cover, unless you want to test your knowledge to the full, and even if you need help the answers are supplied at the back.

The only thing that lets this book down is the lack of photographic material. Even die-hard fans need something to break up the pages of text. Overall a good addition to any collection, even if only for reference purposes and an ideal gift.
