Britain's Most Loved and Best Comedy Double Act

Eric and Ernie Live

Video Review from 2008

The paper bag trick
Eric and Ernie Live is the only live performance to be fully captured on video. Edited down to a reasonable 66 minutes, it was originally filmed as a present for their manager at Fairfields Hall Croydon.

With the backing of a small orchestra, Eric and Ern strut out onto the stage to the throngs of Bring Me Sunshine. Things get off to a fast start and the gags and one-liners are soon flowing. Even the inevitable fracas back stage gets a look in. Can we say fracas?

The first full Morecambe & Wise routine to make an appearance is the ‘fat lady in the audience’, first seen in Two Of A Kind in the early 60’s. This is quickly followed by a torrent of gags, some ad-libbing and more one-liners, all beautifully fed by Ern.

A quick foray in the slapping dance and we move on to the ventriloquist routine, with Charlie being slapped and punched much the delight of the audience. Yes, the paper bag routine gets a look in too, why is this always funny?

Both Eric and Ern are relaxed and give a lively show including a nice soft shoe dance, proving they still have old music hall skills.

A worthy video to add to your collection, maybe buy 2, as you’ll soon wear the first one out!
